Smithville firefighters have been responding to the needs of our community since 1921. Today, the Smithville Area Fire Protection District serves 112 square miles including portions of both Platte and Clay counties. The fire district includes the City of Smithville as well as the Paradise, Ectonville, and Arley communities. Smithville firefighters are all certified by the State of Missouri to meet national standards for fighters and fire officers. Additionally, all of our full-time members are licensed EMTs or paramedics. In addition to emergency medical care, our firefighters are also certified in hazardous materials response. Due to serving Smithville Lake, Smithville firefighters also receive specialized training in water rescue, boat operations, and ice rescue.
Currently, firefighters respond to all emergencies from Fire Station #2 located at 341 Park Drive. Fire Station #3 is in the Paradise community. That station is not yet staffed. Staffing Station #3 will require a tax increase to be approved by the citizens of the district. Fire Station #1 is located in downtown Smithville. Station #1 was the station that our community volunteer firefighters responded from for many years. Today, the building is used for storage and is also our training facility.
In 2017 Smithville firefighters responded to 1,286 incidents. Our run volume steadily increases as our community grows.
